Where will we be staying? Monday, Jan 7 2013

In Florence, we will be staying in a travelers hostel. Students will be housed in quads with bathrooms ensuite. The location is perfect — we will be living in the Oltrarno, the neighborhood south of the Arno river. As opposed to the centro istorico (Historic Center) where most tourists stay, we will become residents of a true working neighborhood.

Oltrarno retains an authentic Florentine atmosphere made up of art and artisans and lively piazzi where people meet and live together. This neighborhood contains shops and unique workshops, cafes and restaurants, world-famous and lesser-known museums and monuments and is just a short 10-minute walk to the city’s center.

Santo Spirito Neighborhood – Our home for the summer Thursday, Mar 1 2012

TheĀ ForesteriaĀ Gould (foresteria means “guest house”) Ā is situated is between Piazza Santo Spirito and Borgo San Frediano.Ā Ā It is at the center of a historical and popular neighborhood, ten minutes on foot from the Ponte Vecchio and the train station.

The Santo Spirito neighborhood of Oltrarno is the area on the other side of the Arno river. It features a lively mix of high art and culture (there are several important Renaissance sites) andĀ streetscapes, including markets, cafes and restaurants, piazzas where people meet and live together, artisan workshops, and the flow of contemporary Florentine life. It is very much a place for the traveler looking to scratch a little more beneath the surface of the city.
